Leo Kaplan was born in Binghamton, New York in 1912, and attended the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (a precursor to RIT). He studied illustration and advertising art, and graduated in 1932. He joined the Air Force in 1942 and spent 2 1/2 years in England as a First Sergeant with a Ferry and Transport unit. It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
